The Top Content Marketing Terms for 2016

Content Marketing Terms for 2016

What is your 2016 marketing plan? One of the crucial marketing strategies that many companies are starting to consider is content marketing.

As content marketing continues to grow and change, it can be difficult to know where to begin when it comes to next year’s strategy. We’ve put together a few of the top content marketing terms for this year to help you prioritize and ensure you implement a winning strategy.

SMO (Social Media Optimization)

No, this isn’t a typo. We aren’t talking about SEO or SEM, we’re talking about social media optimization. People are starting to search on social networks, instead of search engines, for the information they want. This trend is becoming popular as more and more people join social platforms and as consumers learn they can’t find everything they need from a simple Google search.

So what can you do to take action? Optimize your social media pages and posts in the following ways:

  • Create shareable content to build social proof, a psychological phenomenon where people assume the actions of others reflect correct behavior for a given situation.” The more your content is shared, the more people on social sites see that content, and you, as credible. A great way to do this is by adding visuals, like an image or video because they will increase engagement. Tweets with images were retweeted 35% more and tweets with videos received a 28% bump in retweets.
  • Don’t be a robot that pushes content without an opinion. Be social (that’s what these networks are for, hence the name!) and create a personal feel to your posts.
  • Connect and communicate with thought leaders. In doing this, your goal should be to build credibility with the thought leader and their audience. In doing this, your tweets should receive more engagement, visibility and an even larger boost in credibility.

Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is any technique used to market a product using technology. The goal of digital marketing (as with any marketing strategy) is to convert leads to customers and gain brand awareness. As new technologies emerge, digital marketing will continue to grow.

As expected, 2016 will bring even more changes in digital marketing. You’ll want to consider the following:

  • Video will be even bigger. Earlier this year, I was at a marketing conference where experts were proclaiming that 2015 was the “year of the video.: While video ads became even more crucial to digital marketing in 2015, they will explode in 2016. The best videos are entertaining, personal and don’t try to sell the viewer on something outright.
  • Mobile will surpass desktop or laptop views. It’s crucially important for you to optimize your website to be mobile-responsive now. As of April 2015, Google ranks websites with mobile-friendly design higher. Don’t wait until 2016. Those who do not update their websites to be mobile-responsive are already ranking lower in organic search and will lose website views.
  • Wearable tech will continue grow. Just as consumers always seem to carry their cell phones with them wherever they go, wearable technology is constantly attached to consumers, and this trend is continuing to grow. As more people buy into tech like the Apple Watch, businesses will fight for marketing space on an even smaller screen.

ROI

While the concept of measuring ROI is certainly not new, the need to measure it, and knowing how to measure it, is still a top challenge for marketers. According to the Content Marketing  Institue, an additional challenge for marketers is understanding whether their content is even effective.

Content marketing isn’t going anywhere. Marketers must start considering valid ways to measure and analyze content marketing ROI in 2016. If you’re looking for a guide to help you measure your content marketing ROI, try using this free ebook.

Infographics

Visuals are more important than ever when it comes to engaging an audience. Just as social sites like Facebook and Twitter see more interactions from posts with videos and images, longer form content will become increasingly visual. The infographic is a great example of this.

People are drawn to infographics because we are all visually wired. The next time you are considering creating content, like a blog, ask yourself if the content would be better consumed in a more visual manner. Even if you don’t end up creating a full infographic, adding more visuals to your content will help you engage your audience even more.

With the evolving landscape of marketing, new content marketing terms will continue to pop up often. Prioritize a few of the most important terms and turn them into actionable strategies to see your marketing efforts soar this year in 2016.
